Within the framework of the proposal made by the European Union, eight core competencies have been identified:

  • Competence in linguistic communication.
  • Mathematical competition.

Competition in linguistic communication

It refers to the use of language as an instrument for oral and written communication, representation, interpretation and understanding of reality, construction and communication of knowledge and organization and self-regulation of thought, emotions and behavior.

Knowledge, skills and attitudes of this competition can express thoughts, emotions, experiences and opinions, as well as dialogue, become a critical and ethical judgment, generate ideas, structuring knowledge, give coherence and consistency to the speech and the actions and tasks, decisions, and enjoy listening to, reading or speaking in oral and written form, all of which contributes to the development of self-esteem and confidence in itself.

In the case of foreign languages, This competition means to communicate in some of them and, with this, enrich social relations and engage in contexts other than their own. Also, It favours access to more and different sources of information, communication and learning.

The contribution of linguistic communication competition to other basic skills development is key, as can be seen in the chart below.

In synthesis, the development of linguistic competence involves the mastery of the language orally and in writing in multiple contexts, and the functional use of, at least, a foreign language, in our case the English.
